The “Wow!” signal still echoes, 49 years later

A brief radio detection made on 15 August 1977 remains one of astronomy’s most memorable unexplained signals.

Astronomers using Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope detected an unusually strong narrowband signal on 15 August 1977. The observation became known as the “Wow!” signal after astronomer Jerry Ehman marked the computer printout.

The signal has never been satisfactorily repeated or conclusively explained. Its enduring place in popular astronomy reflects both the intrigue of the original detection and the discipline required before an observation can become evidence.

Big Ear recorded the event during a sky survey rather than a targeted conversation with a known source. The signal rose and fell over roughly the interval expected as the telescope’s observing beam swept past a fixed point in the sky. That shape made the detection interesting, but a single pass could not establish its origin.

SETI searches demand repeatability because radio observatories operate in an environment filled with natural emissions, satellites and terrestrial interference. Follow-up observations did not recover the same signal. Without repetition, astronomers cannot test whether the source persists, moves, changes frequency or behaves in ways that distinguish technology from an unusual natural event.

Proposed explanations continue to appear, including natural radio emission under uncommon conditions. None has converted the 1977 printout into proof of extraterrestrial intelligence. Its real scientific value may be methodological: the episode shows why an exciting candidate begins an investigation rather than ending one.
