Sardinia’s upgraded radio telescope returns to the FRB mystery

The large Italian observatory will continue probing fast radio bursts—brief cosmic signals whose origins remain incompletely understood.

The Sardinia Radio Telescope has received upgrades that will support further observations of fast radio bursts.

FRBs are short, powerful radio signals from deep space. Expanded observing capability gives astronomers more opportunities to locate, compare and characterise these fleeting events.

The Sardinia Radio Telescope is a 64-metre steerable dish near Cagliari. Its location and instrumentation allow it to participate in pulsar, transient and interferometric observations, and upgrades are intended to extend performance at higher frequencies while improving how precisely the structure is measured and controlled.

Fast radio bursts last only a tiny fraction of ordinary observing time, so sensitivity and rapid detection matter. Some sources repeat and can be revisited; others have been seen only once. Pinpointing their host environments and comparing their frequency behaviour are central to separating different physical origins.

An upgraded telescope adds value through networks as well as individual discoveries. Coordinated observations can compare the same transient across frequencies or combine widely separated dishes into a much larger virtual instrument. Commissioning tests will determine how much of the promised high-frequency performance is available for routine science.
