Europe looks back at the day the Sun disappeared

Millions watched the Moon cover the Sun across Greenland, Iceland, Spain and Portugal—revealing the corona and briefly turning day into night.

Europe witnessed its first total solar eclipse in more than two decades on 12 August. The path of totality crossed Greenland and Iceland before reaching Spain and Portugal, while much of the rest of Europe saw a partial eclipse.

For observers inside the path, the Moon completely covered the Sun’s bright disc for a short period. The sudden darkness made the Sun’s outer atmosphere—the corona—visible around the lunar silhouette.

A total solar eclipse happens only where the Moon’s apparent disc is large enough to hide the Sun and its central shadow reaches Earth. That geometry creates a narrow corridor of totality surrounded by a much larger region where observers see only a partial eclipse. Location therefore determines whether the event feels like an unusual dimming or a sudden, complete transformation of the sky.

The 2026 event also demonstrated how differently the same phenomenon can be observed. People on the ground saw the corona and the changing light, while ESA’s MTG-I1 weather satellite watched the Moon’s shadow move across the planet. Its geostationary viewpoint turned a local human experience into a continent-scale sequence.

That dual perspective is scientifically useful as well as visually striking. Eclipse observations can test instruments, document atmospheric responses and make the structure around the Sun easier to see. For most viewers, however, the enduring fact is simpler: a predictable orbital alignment can still make a familiar landscape feel momentarily alien.
