Star formation slows in Andromeda
Detailed Hubble surveys help researchers examine how star formation is declining in our neighbouring large galaxy.
Because Andromeda is comparatively close, astronomers can resolve its stellar populations in far greater detail than is possible for most large galaxies. That makes it a valuable laboratory for understanding how galaxies change over time.
The researchers used two complementary Hubble surveys, including the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Southern Treasury, to reconstruct when different stellar populations formed. Instead of treating Andromeda as one uniform system, they compared regions and found a particularly clear decline near the compact companion galaxy M32.
A slowdown does not mean Andromeda has stopped forming stars. It means the rate inferred from younger populations is lower than in earlier periods, with the decline becoming sharper in the recent geological past. Mapping that history helps astronomers distinguish a long, gradual exhaustion of star-forming material from changes linked to interactions or internal structure.
Andromeda is valuable because it is close enough for Hubble to resolve enormous numbers of individual stars. Distant galaxies are often measured as blended light; in Andromeda, researchers can use colour and brightness to estimate ages across the disc. The result is less like a single snapshot and more like reading different chapters of the galaxy’s biography at once.
